Early Years

Here, we provide ideas for developing children’s curiosity, talk and observation skills through science. We suggest how you can link science to popular Early Years topics and story books. We highlight examples of Early Years children carrying out science activities, and link to some of PSTT’s Early Years resources.

Encourage children to explore, talk and observe through science

Supporting science in the Early Years doesn’t require specialist equipment. Simple resources, thoughtful questioning and opportunities to observe closely can help children develop curiosity, confidence and the language to explain their ideas.

Download our Early Years Science Check List to get started.

Resources to make accessible to the children:

  • Magnifying glasses
  • Plastic pipettes, pots, beakers, jugs, spoons
  • Clipboards, paper, pencils
  • Magnets, torches, cubes to measure with
  • Aprons or lab coats

Effective question prompts:

  • What can you see?
  • What does it remind you of?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • How can we change this?
  • What do you already know about…?
  • What is the same/different?
  • I wonder why / when / how…
  • What would happen if…?

Effective question prompts:

  • What can you see?
  • What do you notice?
  • What does that remind you of?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • What will happen if…?

Plan science experiences

Our Provision Maps offer ideas of provocations for learning science, linked to popular storybooks and topics. Here are some to get you started.

What does science in Early Years look like?

In these examples, Early Years children were encouraged to investigate for themselves and to talk about what they found out:

You can find more Early Years examples by searching ‘Examples’ and ‘Ages 3-5’ on our Teacher Assessment in Primary Science (TAPS) page.

Try some of our resources

Our Early Years wildlife resources develop children’s observation skills, reinforce vocabulary, and provide opportunities for children to think and talk about nature.

Here are some to get you started and there are more available in our Play Observe & Ask in Early Years resources.
